As is well known, September not only marks the end of the busiest tourist season, but also the start of the working year. And for children and young people, it means the beginning of a new year of learning, growth, improvement and maturation.

This academic year, Torrevieja has welcomed more than 14,480 pupils, including some 2,231 nursery school pupils (100 classrooms), 5,738 primary school pupils (231 classrooms), 4,113 in secondary education (138 classrooms) and 2,406 students enrolled in sixth form and vocational training.

Due to the constant growth of the population in Torrevieja and the increase in demand for school places, the need for new educational centres remains a very important issue, which the local administration is seeking to address.

New schools in Torrevieja

This year, the new Nursery and Primary School No. 15 will open in Torrevieja, with capacity for more than 600 children. This brings the total number of nursery and primary schools in the city to 12.:

Schools in Orihuela Costa

For families residing in Orihuela Costa, in addition to the two existing primary schools, a new centre, CEIP nº 20, will be added this academic year, meaning that by the 2025/26 academic year, three schools will have opened their doors:

  2. CEIP Los Dolses (Infantil + Primaria)

  3. CEIP nº 20 (nuevo, Orihuela) (Infantil + Primaria)

Secondary Education

As for secondary schools, the situation is also gradually improving. Last year, the new IES No. 6 (Eras de la Sal), formerly a branch of IES Torrevigía, opened its doors. The administration has promised that this centre will also offer the possibility of studying for the Baccalaureate in the near future.

The following secondary schools in Torrevieja have opened their doors for the 2025/26 academic year:

  1. IES nº 1 – Libertas (ESO, Bachillerato, FP)

  2. IES Mare Nostrum (ESO, Bachillerato, FP)

We hope that all temporary or pending renovation facilities will soon be converted into modern, spacious and well-equipped buildings, with classrooms and all the necessary services for both students and teachers.

We also trust that the problems related to the lack of teachers, school transport and teaching materials will be resolved as soon as possible by the municipal and regional authorities.
