First aid on the beach

Jun 30, 2025

With the start of the hot summer and the beach season, along with the happy holidays, came the sad news of the first accidents on the beaches of Torrevieja..

In the last 10 days, two people have already died on the beach in full view of everyone..

In this sense, TorreviejActual.com has prepared a brief guide on how to protect yourself and what to do if you see someone drowning or feeling unwell from the heat..

How to protect yourself from Heat Stroke and Drowning

☀️ Against the heat:

  • Wear a cap, sunglasses and light-coloured clothes.

  • Avoid the sun between 12:00 and 16:00.

  • Drink water frequently, even if you are not thirsty.

  • Apply sunscreen (minimum SPF 30).

  • Seek shade and rest often.

🌊 Against drowning:

  • Swim only at beaches that are monitored with flags.

  • Do not swim alone or go over the buoys.

  • Do not enter the water after eating or drinking alcohol.

  • Keep an eye on children at all times, even in shallow areas.

  • Always respect the red flag - it's for your safety..

If you see a person drowning in the water:

🚩 Urgent:

  • Don't panic. Call for help: shout to the lifeguard (if there is one on the beach) or to other holidaymakers..

  • Call 112 or 061 - medical emergencies (faster from Spanish number)!  Indicate the exact location (beach, nearest street, landmark)..

  • Don't jump into the water if you can't swim well. It is better to find objects to help you: a life ring, an inflatable mattress, a long pole, etc..

🏊‍♂️ If you decide to swim to the victim:

  • Swim from behind: the panicked person can grab you and drown you.

  • Give him/her an object to hold on to (a life jacket, a ring, a water bottle).

  • Bring him to shore, keeping his head out of the water..

❤️‍🩹 On the shore:

  • Check for breathing. If not breathing, give artificial respiration and cardiac massage..

  • Do not stop until medical personnel arrive.

If a person suffers from Heat Stroke

☀️ Symptoms:

  • Dizziness, extreme heat, nausea.

  • red and dry skin or, conversely, very pale, confusion, loss of consciousness

🔸 What to do:

  1. Move the person into the shade and remove excess clothing.

  2. Cool the person's body with water (especially head, neck and armpits).

  3. Give him water a little at a time.

  4. Do not give coffee, alcohol or iced drinks.

  5. If he/she loses consciousness, call 112immediately..

How to protect YOURSELF by helping others

✅ Assess the situation: do not enter the water if there are strong waves or currents.

✅ Do not approach the person in the water if you are not a good swimmer.

✅Use clothing or a cloth as a barrier if there is blood or vomit.

Call 112 and ask for help from others in the area..

📱 Emergency telephone numbers:

  • 112 — emergencies (health, police, fire brigade)

  • 061 — medical emergencies (faster from Spanish number)

So, we wish you all a great summer and take care of yourself!
