Catholic church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Jesus Christ

Comment

The history of the church of the Immaculate Conception is marked by the development and history of Torrevieja. The neoclassical church we are contemplating today dates from 1880 and was built on a site on which there were earlier churches, of which nothing remains. The growth of the old village of Torre Vigía (Torrevieja) obliged the bishopric to build a church, as the fishermen who lived there had to go to a private estate to hear mass. Thus, in 1789, a church was built, facing the sea, in what is now the Plaza de la Constitución. Years later, the earthquake of 1829, which destroyed almost the entire municipality, also took its toll on the church. Its reconstruction began in 1844 and was completed in 1880, and the towers in 1907. These two towers, with bell towers, frame the brick body of the parish church. On the main façade, which is accessed by a small staircase, the statue of Christ rises above the entrance door framed by an arch, with openings on both sides. The large, white interior is covered with barrel vaults. On the main altar is the image of the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of Torrevieja.
