Salzburg, 1938. Maria Rainer is a young novice at Nonnberg Abbey whose free spirit and passion for music clash with the rigid rules of the congregation. Her frequent escapes into the nearby mountains bewilder the other nuns, who wonder if Maria is destined to become one of them.
To help her find her way, the Mother Abbess decides to send Maria to serve as governess to the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a former officer in the Austro-Hungarian navy who has recently become a widower. Upon arriving at her new home, Maria discovers that the captain has become a withdrawn man since his wife's death and that the children are being raised under strict discipline with no room for fun.
Upon arriving at her new home, Maria discovers that the Captain has imposed a strict discipline, leaving little room for fun. However, with her infectious joy and passion for music, Maria wins the children's hearts, filling the house with laughter, songs, and love. But she also begins to develop feelings for the Captain, which make her question her future at the abbey. Meanwhile, the situation in the country grows increasingly complicated due to the rise of Nazism and the imminent annexation of Austria by the Third Reich.
The Sound of Music, in its new production by Theatre Properties, dazzles not only with its moving story and the unforgettable music of Rodgers & Hammerstein, but also with a majestic set design that transports the audience to 1930s Austria.
