Dec 1, 2025
From 1 January 2026, it will be compulsory throughout Spain to use the V16 emergency beacon as a light signal in the event of a breakdown or accident.
This device will definitively replace traditional reflective triangles, with the aim of improving road safety and reducing the risk to drivers during a roadside stop.
The V16 beacon is placed directly on the roof of the vehicle, without the need to get out of the car, and emits a flashing light visible from a great distance. In addition, the most recent approved models automatically connect to the DGT 3.0 platform, sending the location of the stopped vehicle.

Requirements that an Approved V16 Beacon Must Meet
To be valid from 2026 onwards, the beacon must comply with the specifications established by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT):
Main technical requirements
Mandatory DGT approval.
Flashing yellow light, visible at 360° and up to 1 km away at night.
Light intensity: between 40 and 80 effective candelas at 0° and at least 25 candelas at ±8°.
Minimum autonomy of 30 minutes of continuous operation.
Temperature range: correct operation between –10 °C and 50 °C.
Stability guaranteed by magnetic base, even in strong winds.
Minimum IP54 protection against dust and water splashes.
Flash frequency between 0.8 and 2 Hz.
Connectivity requirements (mandatory from 2026)
Automatic connection to the DGT 3.0 platform via NB-IoT or LTE-M, without the need for mobile apps.
Automatic geolocation of the stationary vehicle.
Integrated SIM, at no cost to the user, with a minimum validity of 12 years.
Certification by a laboratory authorised by the DGT.
Important:V16 beacons that are not connected will only be valid until 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, only connected V16 beacons will be permitted.
Advantages of the V16 Beacon Compared to Traditional Triangles
Greater visibility: 360° light visible up to 1 km away, even in rain or fog.
Greater safety: can be installed without leaving the vehicle, avoiding risks on the road.
Quick and easy to use: attaches in seconds thanks to the built-in magnet.
Automatic communication with the DGT: sends the real-time location of the broken-down vehicle.
Unified safety standard thanks to strict technical requirements and approval..

Conclusion
The entry into force of the mandatory V16 beacon in 2026 marks a significant advance in road safety in Spain. Connectivity with DGT 3.0 will enable a faster response in emergencies and greater protection for both drivers and other road users.
When purchasing a V16 beacon, it is essential to verify that it is approved, is connected, includes an integrated SIM, guarantees 360° visibility, has a minimum battery life of 30 minutes and complies with all the technical requirements established by the DGT.
With an average cost of 40 to 60 euros, this device is becoming an essential —and soon mandatory— investment for all vehicles in Spain.
