Four European fugitives found in Torrevieja: wanted by Sweden and Poland

The Guardia Civil has arrested four people in Torrevieja who were subject to European Arrest and Surrender Warrants (OEDE) issued by the judicial authorities of Sweden and Poland.

According to the published information, the detainees include three Swedish citizens and one Polish citizen. The arrests were made as part of checks carried out by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja to identify people wanted by the authorities.

There is an important detail here: this was not a single case and, according to the available information, the four people were not part of the same criminal group. They happened to be in the same city, but they were wanted in connection with different cases.

Kidnapping, drugs and weapons

One of those arrested was a 30-year-old Swedish citizen. A European warrant had been issued in connection with allegations of kidnapping, unlawful deprivation of liberty and theft.

Another Swedish citizen was wanted by the authorities in his country for a drug-related offence. The warrant also concerned the enforcement of a sentence of one year and four months in prison in Sweden.

Several days later, the Guardia Civil located two more people.

One was a 55-year-old Polish citizen, wanted in connection with cases involving attempted murder, kidnapping and illegal possession of weapons.

The fourth detainee was a 22-year-old Swedish citizen, wanted in connection with an offence against public health related to drugs.

Four stories, one city

There is an interesting geographical detail in this story.

Torrevieja has a very large population of foreign residents and visitors, so finding citizens of different European countries in the city is hardly surprising.

What is unusual is this: four people wanted by the judicial authorities of two European countries were found in the same city.

The published information does not indicate that the four knew each other or were acting together. What they have in common, above all, is the place where they were found.

Following their arrests, each will go through the legal procedure applicable to European Arrest and Surrender Warrants.

Why the European search reaches Torrevieja

The European Arrest Warrant is a judicial cooperation mechanism between European Union countries. It allows one country to request the arrest of a person in another EU country for the purpose of surrender.

So someone wanted by, for example, a Swedish court does not automatically become “invisible” after moving to the Costa Blanca.

In this respect, Torrevieja is no different from any other European city.

For one person, it is a place to live by the sea.

For another, it may be the place where the police finally find them.

Torrevieja has seen similar cases before

This is not the first time people wanted internationally or under European warrants have been arrested in the city. The Guardia Civil has previously reported arrests of wanted individuals in Torrevieja.

But the current case is particularly striking because of the combination of four separate warrants: Sweden, Poland, four people and one city on the Costa Blanca.

And perhaps that is the main local paradox.

Torrevieja is such an international city that someone wanted not only in another city or province, but thousands of kilometres away, can eventually turn up here.

The sea is shared. European borders are becoming less visible.

The police, however, seem to remember where they are.
