A series of attacks on elderly residents is under investigation in Torrevieja and La Mata
A Guardia Civil operation in Torrevieja and La Mata has led to the arrest of two men aged 31 and 32 who are suspected of involvement in a series of violent robberies targeting elderly residents.
According to investigators, the victims were between 75 and 93 years old. Authorities have linked the suspects to at least four incidents that took place between March and May 2026. A court in Torrevieja ordered both men to remain in custody while the investigation continues.
Targeting those least able to defend themselves
Investigators believe the suspects used the well-known “snatch theft” method, violently pulling chains, jewellery or handbags from victims.
According to the Guardia Civil, one suspect selected the victim and monitored the surroundings while the other carried out the robbery. Several victims suffered injuries of varying severity.
Investigators say the suspects deliberately focused on areas frequently visited by elderly residents.
In one case, one of the suspects was arrested only minutes after the attack while still carrying a chain stolen from the victim.
Part of the stolen jewellery was later recovered and returned to its owners.
More than a robbery
Street robbery always causes concern.
But when the victim is 80, 85 or even 93 years old, the emotional impact is far greater.
For an elderly person, a fall can mean fractures, hospitalisation and loss of independence.
There is also another form of damage.
Many victims lose the confidence needed to continue walking alone, shopping or enjoying everyday life.
Jewellery can be replaced.
Peace of mind often cannot.
Torrevieja and its senior community
Torrevieja is one of the Mediterranean coast’s most important destinations for retirees.
Thousands of elderly residents spend their days on promenades, in parks, squares, markets and cafés.
That is why crimes against older residents provoke such a strong public reaction.
More than a crime story
Stories like this force us to think beyond crime statistics.
For centuries, societies have shared a simple moral principle.
The weak should not be targeted.
When someone deliberately chooses a 75, 85 or 93-year-old person as a victim, they are not only committing a crime.
They are choosing someone who has the least chance of defending themselves.
Old age deserves respect because it represents a lifetime of work, sacrifice, family, joy and hardship.
That is why these crimes resonate so deeply.
Because they are not only about money or jewellery.
They are about human dignity.
Investigation continues
The investigation remains open and authorities continue to examine whether the suspects may be connected to other similar incidents.
Any final determination of guilt will be made by the courts once the legal process has been completed.
