Law enforcement has dismantled a major criminal network in Torrevieja dedicated to mass SMS scams, with victims spread throughout Spain. According to the investigation, the network's operations center was located in the city of Torrevieja.
During the operation, 14 people were arrested, allegedly involved in sending fraudulent messages that impersonated communications from banks, courier companies, and official services. Initial estimates suggest the network committed nearly a thousand scams, causing losses exceeding €200,000. At least 200 victims have been identified so far, including residents of the province of Alicante and the Vega Baja del Segura region.
The investigation revealed that the criminals used a technique known as smishing. Victims received SMS messages with links that led to fake websites, virtually identical to official ones. After entering their personal or banking information, the data was used to make fraudulent charges or carry out further illegal transactions. The case has been under investigation for several months and has spanned various autonomous communities. Analysis of financial flows and digital footprints led to the discovery of the group's operational core in Torrevieja. Mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices were seized during the raids and are currently being analyzed.
Experts warn that this type of crime particularly affects the elderly, migrants, and users with less digital literacy. Authorities reiterate that banks and official bodies never request confidential information via SMS or ask for access to urgent links.
The case has been submitted to the courts, and the investigation remains open. Further arrests are possible.
