The city of Almoradí became the gastronomic capital of the Vega Baja region for two days. On March 7 and 8, 2026, the town hosted the XI National Artichoke Congress, one of the most important culinary events in the south of Alicante province.

Thousands of visitors gather in Plaza de la Constitución to celebrate the region’s main agricultural product — the artichoke, often referred to as the “green gold” of Vega Baja.

Food stalls, tastings, cooking demonstrations and cultural activities turned the city centre into a large festival.

Gastronomy and showcooking

The congress featured cooking demonstrations and workshops led by well-known chefs.

One of the highlights was a presentation by chef Miguel Ángel Montesinos, who introduced innovative dishes prepared with artichokes.

Local restaurants participated in the “Tapa y Caña” initiative, offering tapas made with artichokes for five euros.

Students from IES Los Montesinos also participated with their own cooking demonstrations.

A popular moment of the festival was the Torrá Popular, where visitors could taste artichokes roasted over an open fire.

The event also included a wine stand called Artichofo Wines, offering wines paired with artichoke dishes.

Culture and atmosphere

The congress also featured cultural events.

The opening ceremony was attended by mayor María Gómez and other local authorities.

One of the most striking moments was the parade of Goddess Cynara, the symbolic representation of the artichoke.

The main square was decorated for the festival and a craft market was held on calle Mayor, offering local products and handmade goods.

Live music performances took place during the day, followed by evening concerts on the square.

A family festival

The event was designed as a family celebration.

A children’s area offered games and workshops, including a cooking class for children organised together with the CDT Torrevieja culinary centre.

Congress awards

During the event the annual “Joyero de la Alcachofa 2026” award was presented to the association Alcachofa de España.

Artichoke production

Around 2,000 hectares of artichokes are cultivated in the Vega Baja region, producing approximately 40,000 tonnes each year.

Spain produces around 200,000 tonnes of artichokes annually, exporting a large share to European markets such as France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Culinary experts estimate that there are more than 300 recipes based on artichokes, making it one of the most versatile vegetables in Mediterranean cuisine.
