Text:The Torrevieja City Council has approved the demolition of Capdepont Square as part of a municipal project aimed at reorganizing public space and urban infrastructure in the city centre.
The project affects Capdepont Square itself and several surrounding streets, including Paseo de la Libertad, as well as nearby sections of Rambla Juan Mateo, Calle Heraclio, Calle Pedro Lorca and Calle Ramón y Cajal. Together, these streets form a key urban area linking the city centre with the port zone and main pedestrian routes.
According to municipal technical services, the current layout of the square and adjacent streets no longer meets modern standards of functionality, pedestrian accessibility and urban integration. The project includes the removal of existing structures and a comprehensive reorganization of the area.
The space currently occupied by Capdepont Square is expected to be transformed into a renewed public area with pedestrian priority, improved connection to Paseo de la Libertad, and better integration with the surrounding streets. The design also considers the preservation and incorporation of green elements.
City officials stress that the aim of the project is to improve the quality of the urban environment, enhance the use of public spaces and adapt Torrevieja’s central area to present and future needs. The implementation timeline will be defined as the project progresses through further planning stages.
