Charities have stepped up their Christmas fundraising efforts for vulnerable families.

In December, several municipalities in the Vega Baja del Segura region stepped up charitable initiatives aimed at supporting low-income families, the elderly, and single residents. Food and gift collection campaigns are timed to coincide with the Christmas season and are carried out with the participation of local associations, social services, and volunteers.

Almoradí

In Almoradí, several community organizations, including Cáritas Parroquial de San Andrés and local volunteer groups, launched a collection of non-perishable food items such as rice, pasta, legumes, oil, and baby food. Collection points are located at parish centers and in municipal social services facilities. According to municipal services, approximately 180 families living in Almoradí and the surrounding area received assistance through such campaigns in 2024.

Torrevieja

In Torrevieja, charitable initiatives are coordinated by Cáritas Interparroquial and the municipal Department of Social Services. Last Christmas, more than 12 tons of food were collected and distributed to approximately 450 families. This year, collection points are also operating in the parishes of Sagrado Corazón and Inmaculada Concepción, as well as in selected supermarkets across the city.

Orihuela

In Orihuela, the campaigns are supported by Cruz Roja Orihuela and parish associations. In addition to food, new toys are also collected for children in families under social care. According to the Red Cross, more than 120 volunteers participated in last year's campaign, and assistance was provided to approximately 300 households in the municipality.

Guardamar del Segura

In Guardamar del Segura, charitable activities are centered around the municipal social center and parish initiatives. The collection focuses on basic food and Christmas packages for elderly residents living alone. In 2024, assistance was sent to more than 70 elderly people registered with the city's social services.

Rojales and Los Montesinos

In smaller municipalities like Rojales and Los Montesinos, collections are organized primarily through local neighborhood associations and schools. According to municipalities, these initiatives reach between 30 and 60 families in each community.

Social services representatives note that demand for food assistance in the region remains stable, particularly among low-income pensioners and families with temporary employment. Charity campaigns will run until the end of December, with some initiatives continuing until early January.
