According to data from the Public Employment Service, the unemployment rate in the Vega Baja del Segura decreased in December compared to the previous month.

In December, 21,797 unemployed people were registered in the comarca, which represents 117 fewer people than in November. This reflects a moderate improvement in the labour market in this agricultural and tourism-based area of the province of Alicante.

📍 Municipal data

A decrease in unemployment was recorded in most municipalities:

  • Torrevieja: −36 people;

  • Dolores: −22 people.

However, unemployment increased in some towns:

  • Orihuela: +4 people;

  • Guardamar del Segura: +4 people.

 By sector and demographics

Sectoral analysis shows that:

  • The services sector led the reduction in unemployment, with 110 fewer registered unemployed people;

  • The construction sector recorded an increase in unemployment, with 41 additional people.

Unemployment fell among both women (−71) and men (−46).

By age group, the largest decrease was recorded among young people under the age of 25, with 158 fewer unemployed individuals.

📌 Assessment and outlook

Experts note that December is traditionally associated with a seasonal increase in employment, particularly in retail and service activities during the Christmas and New Year period, which may temporarily improve labour market figures.

Nevertheless, unemployment levels remain significant, and local trade unions emphasise the need to develop additional employment programmes, especially targeting young people and women.
