Health Ministry launches expansion of Torrevieja University Hospital

The Valencian Regional Health Ministry has initiated administrative procedures for the expansion of Torrevieja University Hospital.

Health Minister Marciano Gómez announced the project following a meeting with the Mayor of Torrevieja. The plan includes the allocation of approximately 12,000 square meters for the expansion of the medical complex.

The hospital serves the southern area of Alicante province, including municipalities in the Vega Baja del Segura region, where the population significantly increases during the summer season.

In recent years, patients and healthcare professionals have reported overcrowding in the Emergency Department, longer waiting times and increased workload for staff.

Torrevieja University Hospital opened in 2006 under the public-private partnership system known as the “Alzira model.” It was managed by Ribera Salud until October 2021, when it returned to full public management under the Generalitat Valenciana.

The start of the procedure marks the beginning of the technical planning phase and the subsequent administrative steps prior to tendering and construction.
