Holy Week. Spain under pressure

Holy Week in Spain is usually seen as a time of processions, travel and vibrant streets. Yet behind this image lies a different reality: the country operates under intense pressure. The past 48 hours have made this clear.

In Almería, a bar explosion —likely caused by a gas leak— left one person dead and three seriously injured. The impact was severe due to the confined space.

At the same time, tensions emerged in the airport system. The risk of disruptions was linked to a ground staff strike affecting major hubs such as Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Málaga and Palma. Even minor disruptions can quickly escalate into widespread delays.

On the roads, the pressure is even higher. A serious accident in Almuñécar required helicopter evacuation. In just a few days, 11 people have already died in traffic incidents across different regions.

With up to 17 million journeys, traffic density increases, reaction time decreases and the likelihood of errors rises. Minor incidents can quickly turn into major congestion.

Security concerns also remain. A gender-based violence case in the Basque Country resulted in a fatality. In Ceuta, a major anti-drug operation uncovered a tunnel from Morocco, seizing 17 tonnes of hashish and leading to 27 arrests.

Structural issues add to the strain: more than half of Spain’s roads require repairs, and certain stretches, such as the A-31 in Alicante, are among the most dangerous.

At street level, this translates into long traffic jams, intensified police checks, more motorcycle accidents and overloaded emergency services. Petty crime also rises in tourist areas.

And yet, despite all this, Spain preserves the spirit of Holy Week. Streets remain lively, and visitors continue to highlight the warmth, openness and unique atmosphere of these days.
