Torrevieja City Council has granted final approval for a large-scale reurbanization project in the Torreta III residential area. The total budget for the project is €9.6 million, making it one of the municipality's largest infrastructure investments in residential areas in recent years.

The project aims to comprehensively renew the urban environment in this area of detached housing and address decades of accumulated infrastructure problems.

What is Torreta III?

Torreta III is a large residential area in northwest Torrevieja, primarily built with one- and two-story houses (chalés). The area began to develop actively in the 1980s and 1990s as a quiet, permanent residential area outside the city's tourist center.

It borders the Torreta II and El Chaparral neighborhoods and is located near the salt lagoons. Torreta III is home to a significant number of families and foreign residents who live in the city year-round. For a long time, the district's infrastructure had been only partially updated, without comprehensive reurbanization.

What does the reurbanization project include?

The approved project includes:

• a complete reconstruction of the street and road network;

• renovation of sidewalks and pedestrian areas;

• replacement and modernization of water supply and sewerage networks;

• improvement of the stormwater drainage system;

• new street lighting;

• improvement of parking spaces.

The municipality emphasizes that this is not a matter of spot repairs, but a complete renovation of the district's utility and public spaces.

Key facts and figures

• Project budget: €9.6 million

• Development type: detached houses

• Infrastructure age: over 30 years

• Key issues prior to the project's start:

o worn-out roads and sidewalks;

o outdated utility networks;

o poor stormwater drainage, especially critical during heavy rains;

Insufficient street lighting.

Once the work is completed, the area is expected to meet modern standards of safety, accessibility, and sustainable urban development.

Timeframe and Implementation

Following the completion of administrative procedures and tenders, the work will be carried out in stages to minimize disruption to residents. The exact start dates for construction will be announced separately.

Where is Torreta III located

The area is located north of the center of Torrevieja, away from the tourist areas by the sea. This emphasizes the social significance of the project: reurbanization will directly impact the daily lives of permanent residents, not just seasonal infrastructure.

The Torreta III project fits into the municipality's broader strategy for renewing Torrevieja's residential areas, built during the city's period of rapid growth. The primary focus is on improving quality of life, reducing infrastructure risks, and adapting the urban environment to climate challenges, including intense rainfall.
