The municipality of Cox, located in the province of Alicante, has become one of the most technologically advanced towns in the Vega Baja del Segura region in terms of municipal security.
The town has implemented an intelligent video surveillance system designed to monitor access points to the municipality and improve the ability of police to respond quickly to potential incidents.
The project was developed in 2024 as part of the municipality’s smart city strategy.
45 cameras and 19 monitoring points
The system includes 19 surveillance points with a total of 45 cameras installed at key entrances and strategic areas of the municipality.
Some cameras use automatic license plate recognition (LPR) technology, which allows vehicles to be identified in real time and compared with police databases.
This technology helps authorities:
monitor traffic flows
detect vehicles reported stolen
identify suspicious movements
send alerts to police control centres.
The system is managed by the Local Police monitoring centre, working in coordination with the Guardia Civil.
Project investment
The project was awarded through a public tender process. The total investment is approximately €97,000.
Installation was carried out by the company Grupo Multimedia Pic S.L.
Local authorities say the project aims to improve public safety, prevent crime and enhance traffic monitoring.
Monitoring access routes
A key objective of the project is the monitoring of roads entering the municipality. Cameras placed along major access routes allow police to detect suspicious vehicles quickly.
Other municipalities adopting similar systems
Cox is not the only municipality in Vega Baja implementing such technologies. Similar surveillance systems are being installed in Torrevieja, Orihuela, Guardamar del Segura and Almoradí.
Examples of crimes solved using these systems
License plate recognition technology has proven effective across Spain. In Torrejón de Ardoz, near Madrid, police used the system to identify a vehicle linked to a series of robberies and arrest the suspects.
In Barcelona, mobile police cameras using similar technology helped locate more than 2,000 stolen vehicles in one year.
