Stroll through the streets of Torrevieja and in almost every corner of the city you will come across a chicken or hear the crowing of a rooster.
A reality that the residents of Torrevieja have faced for many years and that may soon end.
Faced with this situation, and given that their population is "out of control," the City Council has announced that it will allocate €26,000 to cull the 700 roosters and hens currently roaming freely in the city's green areas and roundabouts.
Therefore, the City Council will contract services for the control, collection, and movement of wild purple swamphens in the municipality of Torrevieja, thus reducing the "dangerous situations" that these birds can create for pedestrians and drivers.
A visual count confirmed the presence of approximately 700 birds, including hens, chicks, and roosters. Thus, in order to ensure the safety of the population and reduce the number of these animals, the birds will be monitored, as announced last Friday by the Councilor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala.
The contract is expected to be for a 12-month period, with a base value of €26,296. The purpose of the contract will be to conduct monitoring at various points in the city.
