The nine-metre sailing boat whose search had previously been suspended in Spanish waters has been located off the coast of Algeria. The sole person on board was found alive and in stable condition.

The vessel departed on 15 January from the port of Gandía, with an intended destination of Guardamar del Segura, Alicante. After contact was lost, Spain’s maritime rescue services launched an extensive search operation, which was later suspended due to a lack of leads.

Discovery near the Algerian coast

Nearly two weeks later, the boat was spotted by a Frontex aerial patrol in the western Mediterranean, around 50 nautical miles off the Algerian coast, in the area of Béjaïa Province.

After its position was confirmed, the sailing boat was taken under tow by a nearby commercial vessel and brought to the port of Béjaïa, where the sailor received initial assistance. His condition was reported as stable.

Preliminary information indicates that only one person was on board. Some reports suggest possible technical issues and a lack of onboard communication systems, though these details have not yet been officially confirmed.

The incident highlights the risks of solo sailing and the importance of reliable communication and safety equipment at sea.
