Tomorrow, Saturday, 13 September, following the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Hope and Peace by the Bishop of the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, and at the start of the extraordinary procession that will depart from the Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a new bench commemorating this social and religious event that the city is about to experience will be unveiled.
The so-called "Bench of Hope" has been promoted at the request of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Hope by Torrevieja Town Council, through its Department of Parks and Gardens. This bench will serve as a lasting reminder of this important anniversary, symbolising 40 years of devotion to the Virgin of Hope in Torrevieja, culminating in this coronation.
The presentation will take place once the image of the Virgin of Hope Crowned has left the church, as the float approaches the spot where the bench has been placed, which will be unveiled by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, and the President of the Brotherhood of Hope, Ana Isabel Ferrándiz.
The "Banco de la Esperanza" (Bench of Hope) was designed "as an alliance" by Emilia Aliaga and Pepe Miralles, as both authors have stated. The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Concha Sala, who coordinated the installation work, pointed out that "it will be a landmark commemorating the coronation of La Esperanza and a new point of identity in the Plaza de Oriente".
A "time capsule" has been placed inside the centre of the bench, containing items that will bear witness in the future to the moment when this bench was made. Among the objects placed inside are legal tender coins, a sketch of the bench's design, the latest edition of the Torrevieja Holy Week magazine, the coronation decree signed by the Bishop, posters and prints of the coronation, and a copy of the Vista Alegre weekly magazine, among others.
