The opening of the Pilar de la Horadadatunnel lane on the AP-7 in the direction of Cartagena will take place today, Thursday 3 July. This tunnel, located at kilometre 772 of the Autovía del Mediterráneo, has been closed since 9 May, when a serious accident occurred in which the driver of a lorry carrying flammable material was killed. The collision caused a fire with several explosions which damaged the infrastructure.
The opening of this section was scheduled for last weekend, but on Friday 27th June, the Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José María Pérez Sánchez, clarified that traffic would remain closed for several more days until the works were completed.
This section is heavily used by residents and visitors from the Region of Murcia, who come to enjoy the beaches of Pilar de la Horadada, Mil Palmeras and Campoamor. The closure of the tunnel and the diversion of traffic towards Cartagena along the N-332 to San Pedro often causes long traffic jams in the area, making it a focus of congestion, especially in periods such as the current holiday season.
