The Local Police of Torrevieja has intensified its operations to remove badly parked electric scooters from public roads. In June alone, dozens of these vehicles were removed and around a hundred fines were imposed. In July, the pace of action increased, reaching one hundred fines per week.

The main reason is irregular and disorderly parking: scooters are left on pavements, next to rubbish containers, in parking areas, in the middle of the road, at building entrances and even on hotel terraces. Rental companies often operate without municipal authorisation and without a regulated plan for the occupation of public space, while users abandon them anywhere after finishing their journey. For each scooter taken to the municipal depot, the companies must pay a fee for removal and storage, which means a weekly cost of approximately 7,000 euros in penalties and fees.

With the arrival of September and the start of the new school year, new operations are expected to focus on young people using electric scooters to get to school. More and more students are opting for this means of transport as the only viable alternative, in a context of scarce public transport coverage and a significant reduction in the number of school buses in recent years, despite the increase in the number of students.

We are firmly convinced that the massive expansion of the use of electric scooters in our region is not just a fad, but a real need generated by the lack of diverse, efficient and regular public transport routes. In a city with overcrowded taxis, constant traffic jams and few mobility alternatives, the solution cannot be limited to sanctions and recalls. Authorities must offer a structural response: creating authorised parking zones, safe lanes and clear regulations that integrate micro-mobility into the urban environment rather than stifling it.
