Pilar de la Horadada, November 28, 2025 — Local authorities have begun dismantling the El Varadero complex, located on Las Higuericas beach, after courts ruled that the facility was operating without a valid license.
The complex, with an area of approximately 20,000 m², opened in 2019 as a multifunctional sports and recreation center, with plans for a swimming pool, restaurant, fitness facilities, and beach sports. However, in the summer of 2021, the expansion plan, previously approved by the city council, was declared null and void: the project altered the original terms, failed to obtain the required approvals, and violated coastal regulations.
In September 2024, the court fully confirmed that the lack of a license rendered the operation illegal. In March 2022, the city council terminated the concession agreement, confiscating the security deposit of €57,934.56. The municipality has decided to dismantle everything except the outer fence. The land will retain its status as a sports and recreational area.
Local residents and environmental activists are expected to support the site's conversion to public and sports use, taking into account past complaints, including those regarding noise and the center's illegal activities.
