Snowfall recorded in Spain

In the first days of January, Spain has experienced unstable winter weather, marked by falling temperatures and snowfall in several parts of the country. According to meteorological services, snow cover has been recorded mainly in mountainous and high-altitude areas, as well as on some interregional road sections.

Where snow has been recorded

Snow has fallen and persisted in the following regions, provinces and locations:

• Pyrenees The provinces of Huesca (Aragon), Lleida (Catalonia) and Navarra have reported stable snow cover in mountainous areas and on access roads to ski resorts.Traffic restrictions were introduced on certain mountain roads.

• Cantabrian Mountains In Asturias, Cantabria and northern León, snow was recorded in mountain municipalities and on mountain passes, including secondary roads.

• Central SpainIn the Sierra de Guadarrama (provinces of Madrid and Segovia), snow appeared at higher elevations, with partial restrictions on mountain roads.

• Andalusia (mountain areas) In Sierra Nevada (Granada), significant snow accumulation was recorded around the ski resort and on access roads.In the province of Málaga, snowfall was limited to mountainous areas (Sierra de las Nieves, Sierra Tejeda), without affecting coastal cities.

It is important to note that no snowfall has been recorded in Mediterranean coastal areas or in the lowlands of southeastern Spain.

Weather situation in Torrevieja and Vega Baja del Segura

While snow has affected northern and central Spain, Torrevieja and the entire Vega Baja del Segura region remain outside the snowfall zone.

Forecast for the coast and southern Alicante province

In the coming days, the region is expected to experience a cool but typically Mediterranean winter:

  • cloudy skies, rainfall and moderate winds;

  • daytime temperatures between +11 and +14 °C;

  • night-time temperatures around +3 to +6 °C.

No snowfall is forecast, either along the coast or in inland municipalities of Vega Baja (Orihuela, Callosa de Segura, Almoradí, among others).

Meteorologists note that even during cold air intrusions, the local relief and proximity to the sea effectively protect the region from snow, which in such situations remains confined to mountainous areas.

For southern Alicante province, including Torrevieja and Vega Baja del Segura, winter remains mild: rain and cool temperatures, yes; snow, no.

Drivers and travellers are advised to take weather conditions into account when travelling to mountainous regions.
