The Vega Baja del Segura region remains under the influence of the Emilia atmospheric depression, which brought intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and increased climate risks on December 16. According to meteorological and emergency services, the weather episode remains active and requires increased public attention.
Consequences of the severe weather on December 16
On December 16, Vega Baja and other areas of Alicante Province recorded significant downpours—up to 50 liters of rain per square meter in less than four hours. The precipitation was accompanied by thunderstorm activity and gusty winds.
Due to the intense rainfall, firefighters responded several times to water pumping (achiques) in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage. Localized incidents related to thunderstorms were also reported.
In several municipalities, temporary access problems were reported on secondary roads, particularly near ravines (ramblas) and agricultural areas. There were no reports of casualties.
Warnings and Safety Measures
Amid worsening weather conditions in the Comunidad Valenciana, the Es-Alert system, an emergency mobile alert, was activated. Authorities issued messages warning of the risk of flooding, recommending avoiding low-lying areas, not crossing flooded roads, and, if possible, limiting movement during periods of heavy rain.
National and international sources are describing the situation as meteorologically tense, with a risk of very heavy downpours, sudden flooding, and gale-force winds along the Mediterranean coast.
Forecast for today and tomorrow. According to forecasters, storm conditions will persist.
The following are expected in Vega Baja today and tomorrow:
• Partly cloudy skies with occasional rain;
• Possible thunderstorms in isolated areas;
• Strong winds, especially along the coast;
• Unstable conditions in areas with rapid runoff. Precipitation intensity may fluctuate, but the risk of localized flooding remains high, especially after soils have already become saturated.
Advice for Vega Baja Residents
Civil Protection Services recommend:
• Avoid driving near riverbeds, ravines, and low-lying areas;
• Do not cross flooded roads or streams, even at shallow depths;
• Follow official warnings from AEMET, Protección Civil, and municipal authorities;
• Secure objects on balconies and terraces due to possible gusts of wind;
• Exercise particular caution when traveling by car.
Storm Emilia remains an active weather factor in Vega Baja. While no serious consequences are expected, the combination of precipitation already fallen and continued atmospheric instability requires increased caution. The situation remains under the control of emergency and meteorological services.
