On 31 March 2026, a strike by teachers at state non-university educational institutions will take place in Torrevieja and throughout the province of Alicante.  The strike is not a national one, but is being organised at the level of the Valencian Community and affects the three provinces: Alicante, Valencia and Castellón.

Where is the strike taking place?

The strike has been called by the STEPV, CCOO, UGT and CSIF trade unions and affects all state schools in the region: nursery schools, primary schools and secondary schools. Universities are not taking part in the strike.

Protests and demonstrations are planned in major cities such as Alicante, Valencia and Castellón, and are also being supported in other towns, including Torrevieja.

Reasons for the strike

The main reason is the lack of real progress in negotiations with the Regional Ministry of Education. The trade unions have criticised the delays in the process and the lack of concrete solutions.

Among the main problems highlighted:

  • loss of purchasing power and calls for pay rises;

  • high pupil-teacher ratios (overcrowded classrooms);

  • a shortage of teaching staff and delays in finding replacements;

  • excessive red tape;

  • insufficient funding and the state of educational infrastructure;

  • promoting and supporting education in Valencian.

Teachers’ demands

The trade unions have put forward a list of demands:

  • wage increases and inflation compensation;

  • a reduction in class sizes;

  • increase in teaching staff;

  • reduction in administrative burden;

  • investment in schools and the modernisation of infrastructure;

  • prompt filling of vacancies and cover roles;

  • genuine negotiations with the authorities.

How schools operate

  • The centres will remain open, but will operate with mandatory minimum services.

  • Some members of staff will be required to come to work by order of the administration.

  • The following are possible:

    • cancellations or reductions in class hours;

    • group of students;

    • the absence of certain subjects.

How each school operates will depend on the level of staff participation in the strike.
