In the first half of 2025, more electricity was generated from renewable energy sources than from coal.
This has been made possible by the rapid development of solar and wind power stations.
According to data Ember Institute, "clean" generation increased by 363 TWh (7.7% growth) to reach 5,072 TWh.
The share of renewable sources in global electricity production increased from 32.7% to 34.3%, while the share of coal-fired power generation decreased to 33.1%.
China accounts for 55% of global growth in solar power generation.

In the European Union, solar energy surpassed coal as a source of electricity for the first time in 2022. In 2023, according to preliminary data, coal production and consumption in the EU reached their lowest level in history, reported Eurostat.
Global CO2 emissions in the energy sector decreased slightly by 12 million tonnes of CO2 (-0.2%) to 6,963 million tonnes of CO2 in the first half of 2025. This reduction was made possible by the fact that the growth of solar and wind energy outpaced the growth in demand and led to a slight reduction in fossil fuel consumption. Without the growth of solar and wind energy, global emissions would have increased by an estimated 236 million tonnes of CO2 (+3.9%).
