The Torrevieja City Council formally brought the long-delayed Low Emission Zone (Zona de Bajas Emisiones, ZBE) to a plenary session and approved its final implementation in 2026.
The ZBE project will cover more than one million square meters of the city center and aims to reduce air pollution and improve residents' quality of life by restricting access to high-emission vehicles.
During the discussion, city officials emphasized that the implementation of the ZBE will not only improve the environmental situation but also reduce healthcare costs by reducing the impact of pollution on public health.
Implementation includes the preparation of monitoring infrastructure, installation of air quality sensors, and traffic regulation in the city's central areas. The zone is expected to become fully operational in 2026, with the gradual introduction of monitoring and regulatory mechanisms.
This decision marks an important step for Torrevieja in the context of national and European policies to combat air pollution and meets the requirements for municipalities with a population of over 50,000 inhabitants.
