Torrevieja as a base, Spain as a target: why police tracked another home burglary gang

When residents notice a thin thread, a small drop of glue or an unusual mark near an apartment door, most people ignore it. However, for police these small details can sometimes be important warning signs.

This week the National Police dismantled a major criminal group that, according to investigators, used Torrevieja as one of its operational bases while committing residential burglaries across different regions of Spain.

According to the investigation, 13 people were arrested. Investigators believe the group operated in Madrid, Guadalajara, Valladolid, Valencia and other areas. However, Torrevieja was allegedly used as a place to stay, organize and coordinate activities.

One method associated with these groups is the so called “thread technique”. A nearly invisible thread or adhesive marker is placed on a door. Later the criminals return. If the thread remains untouched, the property may be empty. If it is broken, someone has entered the apartment.

Open information from major police operations over recent years shows that several organized burglary groups have been dismantled in the Vega Baja region. Similar patterns often appear: mobile groups, rented properties and movement across different provinces.

Police recommend paying attention to unusual signs near apartment doors, including threads, glue marks, plastic pieces or other strange indicators.

Sometimes small details become the first warning.
