The Torrevieja Town Hall has approved a new budget measure that will grant 450 euros for each child bornfrom 2024 onwards. The Popular Party (PP)-led city council has allocated 300,000 euros to the programme, which is expected to cover up to 600 applications based on demographics.

Although the regulations have not yet been finalised, the aid will be processed directly by the city council to avoid delays.

The initiative has been strongly supported by Óscar Urtasun, councillor for Social Services who joined the local government in 2023 and who has been involved in family support policies for many years. Urtasun is a former president of the Alicante Large Families Association (ASAFAN), and there are currently some 900 general category large families and 70 special category large families registered in Torrevieja.

Torrevieja is not suffering from depopulation, but it is one of the cities with the highest population growth in Spain.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INE), in 2024 alone the population increased by more than 6,000 people, exceeding the official figure of 94,800.

According to the municipal census, at the beginning of 2025, the city had more than 106,000 inhabitants.

The University Hospital of Torrevieja registered 1,057 births in its area of influence in 2024, of which approximately half corresponded to residents of the municipality..
