Torrevieja to build monument in memory of 1938 bombing victims

In Torrevieja, a decision has been made to address one of the most tragic episodes in the city’s history. The municipal council has unanimously approved the initiation of procedures to build a monument honoring the victims of the bombing on August 25, 1938.

The events date back to the Spanish Civil War, when the city was attacked by fascist forces, including the Italian aviation unit Aviazione Legionaria. Nineteen people were killed, dozens injured, and residential areas were heavily damaged.

Official documents from the time described the event as:

“...a criminal attack against our defenseless city...”

That morning began like any other. Daily life was unfolding normally until aircraft appeared overhead. Around sixty bombs were dropped, destroying homes and causing widespread damage.

Personal testimonies bring a human perspective:

“My grandmother… did not know that the sound would take her life within seconds… the bomb exploded and destroyed the house…”

The bombing of Torrevieja was not isolated. Cities such as Alicante and Valencia also suffered attacks with hundreds of victims. However, in smaller towns, each loss left a deeper personal impact.

Nearly ninety years later, the city takes a step toward preserving this memory. While details of the monument remain unknown, the decision itself represents an act of recognition and respect.
