The Guardia Civil has arrested a man and a woman in Torrevieja on suspicion of stealing a gold chain from an elderly person. The incident took place around 1:00 p.m. in the Curva del Palangre area.

According to investigators, the woman approached the victim under the pretext of a friendly gesture and, during a brief embrace, removed the gold chain from the victim’s neck. This technique, known as the “hug method,” is commonly used against elderly individuals.

A local resident witnessed the incident, recorded it on a mobile phone, and immediately alerted authorities. The video helped officers quickly identify the vehicle used by the suspects.

Within minutes, patrol units blocked one of the city’s exits and stopped the car. During the search, the stolen gold chain was found in the woman’s pocket. The jewelry was recovered, and both suspects were brought before a judge. The investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are asking for public assistance in formally identifying the victim so the chain can be officially returned.

Street Crime in the Area

According to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior, property-related crimes in Alicante province decreased slightly in 2024 — by around 2–3% compared to the previous year.

However, coastal municipalities such as Torrevieja and the Vega Baja region continue to report hundreds of street thefts annually. There is no sharp surge, but this type of method remains recurrent.

Police advise residents and visitors to avoid physical contact with strangers and remain alert in public spaces.
