Part of Spain’s Desalination Plan Excluded from Next Generation EU Funds
A significant portion of Spain’s national plan to expand and modernize desalination infrastructure has not been included in the final list of projects financed by the European Next Generation EU recovery funds.
The Mediterranean investment program was initially expected to receive substantial European recovery funding. However, several projects were excluded from the approved financing package.
The situation is particularly relevant for Torrevieja, home to one of the largest desalination plants in Europe. The facility is currently undergoing expansion aimed at increasing production capacity and securing water supply for southeastern Spain, including the provinces of Alicante and Murcia.
The expansion of the Torrevieja desalination plant is considered a strategic component of Spain’s response to structural drought and long-term water scarcity. The absence of full European funding implies that additional national or alternative financial mechanisms may be required.
Amid intensifying climate pressure, sustainable water supply remains a critical issue for the Vega Baja del Segura region and the wider southeastern part of the country.
